When we think about climate change solutions, whales might not be the first thing that comes to mind. Yet, these gentle giants of the sea play a surprisingly important role in maintaining the health of our oceans and in regulating Earth’s carbon cycle. Their daily activities, migrations, and even their deaths contribute to storing carbon and keeping it out of the atmosphere.

Whales as Ocean Gardeners

Whales spend much of their time feeding at depth, consuming krill, fish, and plankton. When they return to the surface, they release nutrient-rich waste. This process, often called the “whale pump,” fertilizes surface waters with iron and nitrogen. These nutrients stimulate the growth of phytoplankton, microscopic plants that are essential to the marine food chain. Importantly, phytoplankton also absorb carbon dioxide during photosynthesis, acting as a natural carbon sink. The more phytoplankton grow, the more carbon they capture.

The Carbon Sinking Effect

Whales also contribute to long-term carbon storage when they die. A whale carcass, sometimes called a “whale fall,” sinks to the ocean floor, carrying with it tons of carbon that was stored in its body. This carbon can remain sequestered deep in the ocean for centuries. Scientists estimate that a single large whale can store as much as 33 tons of carbon during its lifetime—far more than most trees. By contrast, an average tree absorbs only a fraction of a ton of carbon each year.

Encouraging Whale Populations Helps the Planet

Unfortunately, commercial whaling and environmental threats have dramatically reduced whale populations over the past century. With fewer whales, the ocean loses some of its natural ability to capture and store carbon. Supporting whale conservation is not just about protecting biodiversity—it’s also about bolstering a natural climate solution. Healthy whale populations could significantly increase phytoplankton productivity, which in turn could capture billions of tons of additional carbon dioxide annually.
