Every home has one: that one door that announces itself with a high-pitched shriek every time it is opened. Whether it is the bathroom door in the middle of the night or the pantry door during a quiet morning, a squeaky hinge can quickly become a daily annoyance. Fortunately, silencing a noisy door is one of the easiest home maintenance tasks you can tackle, requiring only a few minutes and some basic household supplies.
The squeak occurs when metal rubs against metal inside the hinge mechanism, usually caused by a buildup of dust, rust, or a lack of lubrication. To fix this, you need to apply a lubricant. While quick-fix sprays like WD-40 can help temporarily, they actually attract dust and can dry out quickly.
For a longer-lasting solution, opt for a silicone-based spray, lithium grease, or even a few drops of mineral oil or sewing machine oil. If you are in a pinch, rubbing a bar of bath soap or petroleum jelly onto the hinge pin can also do the trick. Start with the easiest method: lubricating the hinge in place.
Direct your lubricant of choice onto the seams of the hinge where the knuckles meet. Swing the door back and forth several times to work the liquid down into the mechanism. If the squeak disappears, wipe away any excess oil with a rag to prevent drips on your woodwork or floors.
If the noise persists, you will need to remove the hinge pin for a deeper clean. Close the door fully and wedge a book or shim under the bottom edge to keep it steady. Using a hammer and a large nail, gently tap the bottom of the hinge pin upward until it pops loose.
Pull the pin out and clean it with a rag to remove any old grease and rust. Apply a thin layer of lubricant to the pin, slide it back into the hinge, and tap it back down with your hammer. With just a little bit of effort, your home will instantly feel more peaceful.
Taking care of these small annoyances around the house not only improves your daily living experience but also prevents wear and tear on your doors over time.
