A squeaky door is one of those minor household annoyances that we tend to ignore until it drives us absolutely crazy. Whether it is the bathroom door waking everyone up in the middle of the night or a closet door that protests every time you grab a coat, the fix is incredibly simple. You do not need to call a handyman or spend a fortune on specialty tools.
In fact, you probably already have everything you need in your pantry or garage. The easiest place to start is with lubrication. While WD-40 is a popular choice, it is actually a solvent rather than a long-term lubricant, meaning the squeak might return in a few weeks.
Instead, look for a dedicated silicone spray or a lithium grease. If you want a quick fix using what you have on hand, olive oil, petroleum jelly, or even a bar of soap can work wonders. Simply apply a small amount to the hinge pins, swing the door back and forth a few times to distribute the lubricant, and wipe away any excess to prevent drips.
If a simple spray does not do the trick, the hinge pins might be dirty or rusty. To fix this, you will need to remove the pins. Use a hammer and a nail punch to gently tap the pin upward from the bottom of the hinge.
Once the pin is free, use a piece of steel wool or a stiff brush to scrub away any rust, dirt, or old grease. Coat the clean pin with a thin layer of petroleum jelly or machine oil, slip it back into the hinge, and tap it back into place. Sometimes, the squeak is not from friction in the hinge itself, but from the door sagging and rubbing against the frame.
This is often caused by loose screws. Grab a screwdriver and check each screw on the hinges. If a screw keeps spinning without tightening, the wood screw hole is likely stripped.
You can easily fix this by removing the screw, inserting a wooden toothpick dipped in wood glue into the hole, snapping off the excess, and then driving the screw back in. This gives the screw new wood to grip onto, securing the hinge and aligning the door. Taking just ten minutes to address these noisy hinges will bring an immediate sense of peace to your home.
It is a satisfying, low-effort project that reminds us how easy DIY home maintenance can really be.
