Laundry is one of those tasks that never really goes away. You finish a load, and before long another pile has appeared. The good news is that a few small changes to how you organize the process can make it feel a lot less overwhelming.

Start by giving every person in your household their own laundry basket or bin. This one shift does a surprising amount of work. When clothes are already separated by person, you spend less time sorting after the wash is done.

Kids who are old enough can also learn to bring their own basket to the laundry room on a set day, which takes one more thing off your plate. Pre-sorting is another habit that pays off quickly. Keep two or three smaller bins in your laundry room labeled by load type, such as darks, lights, and delicates.

As baskets come in, toss items directly into the right bin. When a bin is full, that load is ready to go. You stop staring at a giant mixed pile trying to figure out where to begin.

One of the biggest reasons laundry piles up is that clean clothes sit in the dryer or in baskets for too long. Try setting a simple rule for yourself: folded and put away before the next load goes in. It sounds strict, but it keeps the cycle moving and prevents that second mountain of clean clothes from forming on your bed or couch.

For small spaces, over-the-door organizers on the laundry room door can hold dryer sheets, stain remover, and other supplies so they are easy to grab without cluttering the space. A shelf above the washer and dryer, even a simple floating shelf, gives you a spot to keep detergent contained and off the machines themselves. If you share a home with several people, a posted laundry schedule can reduce the frustration of waiting for a machine that someone else has been using all afternoon.

Even a simple handwritten note on the wall with assigned days works better than no system at all. None of these ideas require a major renovation or a big shopping trip. Small adjustments to how you handle laundry from start to finish can turn a dreaded chore into something that just quietly gets done.
